  • Homeostasis I - Blood, Heart and Circulation

This course is designed to focus on the general aspects of the heart and circulatory system.  The first portion focuses on the Blood

    • erythrocyte - production, structure and function, the physiology of tissue oxygen exchange and capillary circulation, and production/destruction abnormalities of the erythrocyte
    • platelets, their formation, structure and function and the thrombotic/anti-thrombotic functions of the platelets and coagulation protein factors within the systemic circulation necessary for bleeding control and homeostasis.

The second and third portions of the course are focused on the heart and the blood vessels describing structure, function, physiology and pathophysiology within the cardiovascular organ system. Many of the common conditions related to heart and vascular disease will be covered here.

The course is intended to provide a broad overview of the items listed above and will build upon some of the fundamental basic science concepts introduced in the preceding three courses. There are “pre-work” assignments based in some part on Lecturio videos designed to prime the learner for the important in-class discussions. Most days will also have a brief, formative knowledge quiz allowing students to consolidate the important take-home messages from the previous session. Following the didactic presentations and discussion, many days will seek to illustrate concepts from the day’s session through the use of clinical correlations in patient care scenarios.
