    Course overview and purpose:

This course is designed to focus on the general aspects of the pulmonary, renal and urinary systems and acid-base disturbances.
The respiratory system has certain functions that overlap with renal system. Lung and kidney functions are intimately related in both health and disease. Respiratory changes help to mitigate the systemic effects of renal acid-base disturbances, and although renal compensation occurs more slowly than its respiratory counterpart. A large number of diseases affect both the lungs and the kidneys, presenting most often with alveolar hemorrhage and glomerulonephritis.
First portion includes basic sciences about the respiratory system, with normal physiology aspects, gas exchange, regulation of the breathing, oxygen transport, ventilation-perfusion imbalance, as the next step we will describe pathological aspects of the pulmonary system, respiratory conditions of the newborns. Next portion of the course focuses on renal system overview, including development of the renal system, its physiology, renal metabolism and oxygen consumption, mechanisms in body fluid homeostasis and pathological aspects of renal system.
And in the last portion we will discuss the acid-base disturbances.

This is the second of three “Homeostasis” courses, which are designed to keep certain aspects of the organism in balance.
